Reutlingia

From Williams et al., 2017:

[Reutlingia, Drugg, 1978, p. 72; Emendation: Below, 1987a, p. 133–134 (Translation: Fensome et al., 1991, p. 437-438)

Tax. jr. syn.: Facetodinium, according to Below (1987a, p.133) — however, Lentin and Williams (1989, p.135) retained Facetodinium as a taxonomic junior synonym of Susadinium.

Type species: Reutlingia gochtii, Drugg, 1978 (pl.7, figs.8–10)]

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Original description: [Drugg, 1978]:

Diagnosis:
Cyst small and ovoidal with a deeply incised paracingulum. the parasulcus is clearly expressed. Broad based acuminate spines crudely delineate a paratabulation which is seemingly 1`, 5``, 0c, 5```, 1````. The archaeopyle is probably apical although almost all specimens are intact.

Affinities:
Reutlingia resembles Horologinella Cookson and Eisenack, 1962, but differs in ornamentation and apparent paratabulation.

Modified description:

Stover and Williams, 1987, p. 185:

Synopsis:
Cysts proximochorate, somewhat hourglass-shaped in outline; autophragm with apparently parasutural spines which imperfectly delineate a paratabulation of 1`, 5``, 0c, 5```, 1````; paracingulum deeply incised, devoid of spines; archaeopyle evidently apical.

Description:
Shape: Outline somewhat hourglass-shaped in dorsal-ventral view, probably elliptical in lateral view.
Wall relationships: Autophragm only.
Wall features: Parasutural features consist of acuminate projections. Autophragm smooth to faintly ornamented.
Archaeopyle: Apical, type uncertain, operculum generally in place.
Paratabulation: Indicated by imperfect alignment of apparently parasutural features; formula: 1`, 5``, 0c, 5```, 1````.
Paracingulum: Indicated by depressed, transverse, undivided band, bounded anteriorly and posteriorly by rows of projections.
Parasulcus: Indicated by poorly delimited depression.
Size: Small, length about 25-50 µm.

Affinities:
Drugg, 1978, stated that Reutlingia resembles Horologinella Cookson and Eisenack, 1962, but differs in ornamentation and apparent paratabulation. Details about how the paratabulations differ were unspecified. Some species of Parvocysta Bjaerke, 1980, particularly P. barbata, resemble Reutlingia. However, Parvocysta has an intercalary, rather than an apical, archaeopyle and its anterior margin is generally peaked or drawn out to form a horn instead of being more or less flat as in Reutlingia.

Reutlingia Drugg, 1978, emend. Below, 1987a. Emended by Below (1987a, p.133) as follows. Arrangement of plates on the dinflagellate amphiesma cop, pop, cap, 5`, 3a-(4a), 7"-6", 7c, 5``` , 2```` , as, z, y, ps: 1```` and 2```` located symmetrically on either side of the dorsoventral plane; large ps omegaform. Cyst habit proximate, proximochorate, acavate, cavate, spheroidal, ovoidal, ovaloidal, peridinioidal, with lenticular, reniform, oval or circular equatorial cross-section, with or without polar processes of variable size; wall composed of pedium and also additional luxuria; surface glabrous, ornamented, nonareate, areate, areae marked by finate ornaments, limbi, or intraareate ornamentation. Archeopyle anterior intercalary, 2a; operculum monoareate, adnate to the precingulars, opercular formula 2a.
