-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Original description: [Maier, 1959]: (Translation: Fensome et al., 1991, p. 235):

Diagnosis:
A genus with the characters of the family Hystrichosphaeridae, revealing the following peculiarities: The capsule does not bear any areolation; it is always characterized by an opening that causes its helmet-like shape.

Description:
The test may have a sculptured or smooth wall and bears both simple and complexly shaped processes partly connected by membranes. It always has a circular to oval opening which may be marked by processes of a particular shape, or may be integrated into the entire body unobtrusively. A distinct orientation of the opening is not apparent. The relationship between opening and body suggests a preformed place of escape of remarkable extent.
