Dinoflagellate biostratigraphy of the Toarcian to Lower Oxfordian (Jurassic) of the Barents Sea region

Smelror, M. and Below, R., 1992; Dinoflagellate biostratigraphy of the Toarcian to Lower Oxfordian (Jurassic) of the Barents Sea region. In: Vorren, T.O. et al. (Eds.), 1992: Arctic Geology and Petroleum Potential. Norwegian Petroleum Society (NPF), Special Publication No. 2, 495-513 Abstract: The stratigraphic distribution for ninety Toarcian to Lower Oxfordian dinoflagellate species from outcrop localities on Svalbard and Franz Josef Land, and from shallow and deep wells in the Nordkapp and Hammerfest Basins is presented. Seven dinoflagellate zones are proposed as follows: Mikrocysta erugata Zone of Middle to Late Toarcian age, Dodekovia bullula-Nannoceratopsis senex Zone of Aalenian and Early Bajocian age, Nannoceratopsis gracilis Zone of Late Bajocian to Middle Bathonian age, Sirmiodinium grossii Zone of Late Bathonian age, Meiourogonyaulax planoseptata-Chlamydophorella ectotabulata Zone of Early and Middle Callovian age, Liesbergia scarburghensis-Wanaea thysanota Zone of Late Callovian age, and Crussolia deflandrei-Wanaea fimbriata Zone of Early Oxfordian age. The proposed zonation scheme is correlated with previously published dinoflagellate zonations of northwest Europe and the Arctic region. A palynological "definition" of the Middle-Upper Jurassic boundary is discussed. The zonal correlation scheme has proved of value both for interbasinal correlations in the Barents Shelf area, and for comparisons of the Toarcian to Early Oxfordian successions of the Barents Shelf and the Sverdrup Basin.
