Oligocene and Early Miocene dinoflagellates from Atlantic Corehole 5/5B, Blake Plateau

Stover, L.E., 1977; Oligocene and Early Miocene dinoflagellates from Atlantic Corehole 5/5B, Blake Plateau. AASP Contribution Series Vol. 5 pp.66-89 pl.3 Abstract Information on the distribution of dinoflagellates in the Oligocene and Early Miocene sections in Atlantic Shelf Corehole 5/5B drilled near the northern end of the Blake Plateau is presented. The sections, which are dated independently on the basis of their calcareous planktonic assemblages and which represent an essentially uninterrupted depositional sequence, are divided into four informal intervals. In ascending order these are: Phthanoperidinium interval (Early Oligocene), Transition interval (Middle Oligocene), Pentadinium interval (Middle Oligocene to Early Miocene) and Tuberculodinium interval (Early Miocene). Although the majority of species from Corehole 5/5B were described previously, several new species and one new genus are described and illustrated herein These are Batiacasphaera hirsuta, B. micropapillata, B. sphaerica, Distatodinim virgatum, Hemicystodinicm congregatwm, Homotryblium vallum, Kallosphaeridium biornatum, K. capulatum and Polysphaeridium pseudocolligerum, new species, and Riculacysta, new genus and species.
