Late Paleogene dinoflagellate cysts with special reference to the Eocene/Oligocene boundary

Brinkhuis, H., 1992; Late Paleogene dinoflagellate cysts with special reference to the Eocene/Oligocene boundary. In: Prothero and Berggren (Eds.), 1992; Eocene- Oligocene climatic and biotic evolution. Princeton Series in Geology and Paleontology, Princeton University Press. p. 327-340 Abstract This paper aims to summarize developments of Eocene-Oligocene dinoflagellate cyst research of the past decades and to present an inventory of the events around the the Eocene/Oligocene (E/O) boundary. Furthermore, the potential of dinoflagellate cyst palynology as a tool for the recognition, timing and understanding of paleo-environmental changes across the E/O boundary is discussed. it is shown that dinoflagellate cysts are particularly suited to correlate marginal marine sediments with time-equivalent more offshore deposited strata. This is demonstrated on the basis of results of studies recently carried out on sections straddling the E/O boundary in central and northeastern Italy, including the E/O type section of the Priabonian Stage.
